Doesn't it strike you as odd that the saguaro, the proud symbol of our state, which is on our license plate and produces our state flower, is rarely seen in Downtown? Downtown PHX is the heart of Arizona, yet scarcely a saguaro to be found. I work as a Tour Guide, and I can't tell you how often I've had visitors who are staying downtown (often for conventions) complain that they can't find a saguaro Downtown to take a picture of/in front of. I'm not saying we should plant saguaro's in lieu of shade tree's, far from it. But places like Civic Space Park, Cesar Chavez Plaza, the planters in front of the Convention Center, Hance Park, Wesley Bolin plaza, Roosevelt Park, etc. need to have some saguaro's! I propose the City plants 100 MATURE saguaro's throughout Downtown & the Capitol Mall area as a testament to our states great desert sentinel. |
