Preserve Phoenix's remaining historic structures

This is not solely my idea, but that of the Phoenix Historic Neighborhoods Coalition (so they are welcome to my "points"). In 2010, Coalition members researched and created a "most endangered dozen list" to call attention to the city’s most threatened historic and archaeological sites to raise public awareness and focus critical attention to aid in their preservation. Here is their updated 2011 list:

• Jones-Montoya House (c. 1879), South Phoenix
• Steinegger Lodge (1889), Downtown Phoenix
• William R. Norton House (1895), St. Matthew neighborhood
• Charles Pugh House (1897), Downtown Phoenix
• Leighton G. Knipe House (c. 1909) and Sarah Pemberton House (c. 1920), Evans Churchill neighborhood
• St. James Hotel (1929) and Madison Hotel (c. 1909), Downtown Phoenix
• First Baptist Church (1930), Downtown Phoenix
• Professional Building (1931), Downtown Phoenix
• Quebedeaux Chevrolet/Paper Heart (1955), Lower Grand Avenue
• White Gates House (1957), Arcadia Camelback Mountain neighborhood
• Arcadia Teardowns, Arcadia Camelback Mountain neighborhood
• Phoenix’s Vintage Signs, citywide

When the list was published, good friend and Coalition board president, Steve Procaccini, stated, “By highlighting landmarks in danger, we can show people and work to save what we might never see again except in photographs. After all, once they’re gone, they’re gone forever.”

Jim, thanks so much for all of your ideas. Councilman Nowakowski and Councilman Simplot will be hosting a Historic Preservation Summit on October 13. Keep an eye out for more information about this event as the date approaches.
