Build a scale model of the Solar System in Central PHX
A scale map of our Solar System, in Central PHX

I'd like to see a public art project created that is a scale model of the solar system, built in Central Phoenix, along the Light Rail line. Here's how it works:

You build a 5' (diameter) model of the Sun in front of the Arizona Science Center. Around the model is info, pictures, etc about the sun.

208' away, incased in a plexiglass display case would be a .2" model of Mercury. The display cases would have info & pictures on the planets in them.

Travel another 180' to come to the model of Venus, it's .52" in diameter, again in a display case.

Travel another 149' (to approx. the corner of Monroe & 5th St) to find the .54" model of the Earth.

Travel another 281', to the corner of 5th and Van Buren to find the .29" model of mars.

Go another 1,977' to find Jupiter. The 6.16" model of Jupiter is located at the Central Phoenix bus station. This is where things get fun, from here on out, the models are so far apart, you take the Light Rail to find the next one!

Go another 2,33' North, to the North end of the Central/Roosevelt LRT station to find the 5" model of Saturn.

Go another 5,184 feet North to the northern edge of the Encanto LRT station to find the 2" model of Uranus.

Travel another 5,854' North to the Indian School stop, Neptune is in front of Macayo's.

If Pluto is included, it would be directly in front of Central HS at that stop! How .

These are rough figures, obviously. Other celestial bodies like moons, asteroid belts, etc could be included.

This would be a great amenity for kids on field trips to the Science Center to learn about the Solar System. Since its spread out along the LRT spine, it would also teach them about the LRT, how to ride public transportation, etc.

I chose the 5 foot diameter of the Sun sort of at random, it could be changed, but I like how it worked out. Each display would contain a map of the system.
