Street Tree Renaissance During the early 20th century, the developers of housing subdivisions in central Phoenix lined the streets of their neighborhoods with specifically selected palm trees as a mark of distinction and prestige. They wanted to give their particular subdivisions a visual identity to set them apart for sales advantage. It also established them with a sense of community pride and civic elegance. PlanPHX is an opportunity to re-introduce that heritage, but this time with street trees that provide shade and cooling along curbside sidewalks that can help make Phoenix a walk-able city. For examples, look to the Ramblas of Barcelona, the Champs Elyse in Paris, or the 16th Street Mall in Denver. Incorporate, even just by reference, the City of Phoenix Tree & Shade Master Plan of 2009, subtitled “Vision Today, Vision Tomorrow,” Lyssa Hall, principal Author.
